Contrary to popular belief, he attributes his illness not to smoking or alcohol consumption, but to engaging in oral s-*.
In an interview with The Guardian, the Academy Award winner disclosed that he had contracted HPV (human papillomavirus) through a s-*ual encounter, which eventually led to the development of cancer.
Without delving into specifics, Douglas pointed out that this type of cancer is a result of HPV transmitted through cunnilingus.
Initially, when diagnosed with the life-threatening disease in 2010, Douglas had attributed it to his history of smoking and drinking.
However, during his recent interview, the 68-year-old actor hinted at the possibility that his son Cameron's legal troubles might have contributed to his condition as well.
Expressing his concerns, Douglas pondered whether the stress stemming from his son's incarceration played a role in triggering the illness.
He emphasized that the cancer he battled is indeed caused by a s-*ually transmitted disease.
Brian Hill, an advocate for cancer awareness, commended Douglas for his candidness in discussing the issue.
Hill, the executive director of the Oral Cancer Foundation, praised Douglas for openly addressing a topic that many find difficult to talk about.
Douglas had previously recorded a public-service announcement for the Oral Cancer Foundation without disclosing the cause of his throat cancer.
Hill, who contracted his own cancer through oral s-*, acknowledged that discussing such matters openly could be uncomfortable for some individuals.
Neither Douglas nor his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, provided comments on the matter.
The report by The Guardian did not clarify whether Douglas contracted the virus through interactions with his spouse.
Following the recent release of the HBO film “Behind the Candelabra,” in which Douglas portrays Liberace alongside Matt Damon, the actor has been in the limelight.
Despite his battle with cancer, Douglas has expressed success in overcoming the ailment and has remained cancer-free for over two years.
Douglas recounted his journey with the illness, revealing that multiple specialists failed to diagnose his cancer and prescribed antibiotics for his persistent oral discomfort.
It was only after a doctor in Montreal conducted a thorough examination that the tumor at the base of his tongue, unnoticed by other doctors, was discovered.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment of diagnosis, Douglas vividly recalls the doctor's reaction upon identifying the tumor, underscoring the importance of timely and accurate medical intervention.
