In the realm of cinema, “Nymphomaniac” has stirred up quite a buzz despite its limited theatrical release.
Lars von Trier's latest art house creation captured attention with its provocative promotional posters, an unconventional discount offer for infants, and, perhaps most notably, its innovative approach to depicting s=x scenes using digitally inserted p^rn doubles.
The groundbreaking technique was devised as a means to capture the explicit imagery desired by von Trier for his exploration of human sexuality, all while ensuring that the A-list ensemble cast, including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf, and Uma, did not engage in actual s–ual acts on screen.
On the set, the process of filming these intimate moments was far from glamorous, as revealed by Stacy Martin, the 23-year-old actress portraying the younger version of the protagonist Joe.
During a conversation at the press event for “Nymphomaniac,” Martin provided insights into the original filming experience of the s=x scenes before the digital alterations were applied.
Although a significant portion of the footage featuring explicit content may not be included in the version shown in US cinemas, the uncut edition showcased only the midsections of the actors' p^rn doubles.
The remaining parts, whether above or below, belonged to Martin, LaBeouf, and others involved in the scenes.
One might assume that the meticulous planning required for such scenes would hinder the actors' ability to convey authentic chemistry.
Surprisingly, for the cast of “Nymphomaniac,” every gesture and movement had to be meticulously choreographed in advance.
According to Martin, “We would rehearse the scenes.
We had to agree on specific positions due to the CGI.
It was all very structured, so we would perform the scene with Shia or the respective actor, with black dots marked on our bodies.”
She further explained, “It was devoid of any sensuality, purely technical, and monotonous at times, as the same process had to be repeated with the p^rn doubles, who engaged in real intercourse, and then the footage was merged.”
