Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in “The Dark Knight” earned him an Oscar, and now, a glimpse into his process has emerged.
In a clip from the documentary “Too Young to Die,” Ledger's father, Kim, shares the diary that the late actor kept while preparing for the role.
For about a month, Ledger isolated himself in a hotel room and later in his apartment to fully immerse himself in the madness of the Joker.
The diary provides insight into Ledger's state of mind during this time and the various inspirations he drew upon.
One striking image in the notebook is that of a hyena, which may have influenced Ledger's distinct laughter, often compared to that of the wild animal.
Ledger meticulously wrote down dialogue from the film, including every line for the memorable hospital room scene where he dons a nurse's outfit.
Interestingly, Kim mentions that Ledger's sister, Kate, used to dress him up in a similar costume when they were younger.
Another recurring figure in the diary is Alex DeLarge, played by Malcolm McDowell, from Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film “A Clockwork Orange.”
Alex, the leader of a violent gang, shares similarities with the Joker, both being chaotic villains who revel in causing chaos and destruction.
Ledger's ability to replicate the eerie expression known as the “Kubrick Stare” adds another layer to his chilling performance.
As fans revisit Ledger's unforgettable portrayal of the Joker, they can now gain a deeper understanding of the meticulous preparation and influences behind his iconic performance.
