When Julia Roberts Ran Away from Her Own Wedding with Kiefer Sutherland’s Best Friend

In a surprising turn of events, renowned Hollywood actress Julia Roberts found herself in a real-life scenario reminiscent of her hit movie “Runaway Bride.”

However, the twist is that this incident occurred years before the film's release.

Back in 1991, just 72 hours before her scheduled wedding to Kiefer Sutherland, Roberts called off the ceremony and ran away with his best friend, Jason Patric.

It seems that Julia Roberts had developed feelings for another man while preparing to tie the knot with Kiefer Sutherland.

The actress first met Sutherland on the set of their 1990 film “Flatliners,” and after a brief romance, they planned their wedding for June 1991.

According to The Mirror, the romance between Roberts and Sutherland grew intense in 1990, even while Sutherland was still married to his first wife, Camelia Kath.

Their divorce was finalized later that year.

However, Sutherland faced allegations of infidelity with a stripper, causing a great deal of controversy at the time.

Despite sporting a large diamond engagement ring, Roberts decided to call off the wedding.

Interestingly, it was not Roberts who delivered the news to Sutherland but a mutual friend.

It was later revealed that on their intended wedding day, Roberts spent time with Jason Patric, Sutherland's best friend at the time.

In a 2016 interview, Kiefer Sutherland commended Julia Roberts for her decision to cancel their wedding.

He praised her courage, stating, “I think she had courage.

It wasn't what she wanted to do in the end.

And I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, ‘I can't do this.'”

The actor further explained that they were both young and deeply in love, but circumstances took over their relationship.

Sutherland concluded by saying, “She was arguably the most famous woman in the world, and this wedding that was supposed to be something between the two of us became something so big.”

Reports reveal that the Oscar-winning actress had already purchased an $8,000 custom-made wedding dress and $425 Manolo Blahnik shoes for the occasion.
