Covered Julia Roberts' Hospital Expenses
Julia Roberts unveils an intriguing revelation about her past during a recent interview with Gayle King.
On October 28, the renowned actress, best known for her role in “Pretty Woman,” celebrated her 55th birthday.
To commemorate the occasion, she engaged in a conversation with King, discussing her achievements over the years, her marriage, important causes, and her childhood experiences.
During the interview, King delved into a lesser-known connection between Roberts and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“Let's start from the day you were born.
Who took care of the hospital bill?”
queried King.
“Okay, her research is impeccable,” Roberts replied with a smile, indicating towards Dr. King.
The actress then confirmed that when her mother gave birth to her, it was Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, who covered the hospital expenses.
Roberts elucidated, “My parents ran a theater school in Atlanta called the Actors and Writers Workshop.
One day, Coretta Scott King reached out to my mother and asked if her children could join the school because they were facing difficulties finding a place that would accept them.
My mom happily agreed and welcomed them.
That's how we all became friends, and they came to our aid when we needed it.”
King pointed out that during the 1960s, it was uncommon for children of different races, especially Black and white, to interact or attend the same schools—particularly in the realm of acting schools.
Thus, paying for the hospital expenses of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts was the Kings' way of expressing gratitude for the kindness shown to them.
