In an exclusive excerpt shared by People, Britney Spears delves into the reasons behind her decision to shave off all her hair back in 2007.
The pop star explains that she was rebelling against the constant scrutiny she faced regarding her body.
Growing up in the public eye, Spears was subjected to relentless judgment and scrutiny.
In her upcoming memoir, “The Woman In Me,” she shares her perspective on the incident that unfolded with the paparazzi, leading to the radical hair transformation.
“I'd been constantly eyed up and down.
People had been telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager,” she writes.
“Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back.”
During the same period in February 2007, Spears experienced other troubling incidents that made headlines.
This included an encounter where she famously hit a photographer's car with an umbrella and another incident where she was seen driving with one of her infant sons on her lap.
These events occurred shortly after she filed for divorce from her husband, Kevin Federline, the previous year.
As a result of these apparent breakdowns, Federline sought full custody of their two sons, which he was granted.
Following multiple stints in rehab and two hospitalizations in a psychiatric facility, Spears was placed under a “temporary conservatorship” in 2008.
This arrangement gave her father, Jamie Spears, and a lawyer control over her finances, estate, and certain personal matters.
The conservatorship spanned 13 years until Judge Brenda Penny terminated it in November 2021.
In her memoir, Spears also sheds light on her experience living under the rules of the conservatorship, which she had previously described as “abusive.”
She discloses that she had to conform to strict guidelines, such as growing her hair out and maintaining a certain physique.
Additionally, she was required to adhere to strict bedtime routines and take prescribed medication.
The “Overprotected” singer expresses her discomfort with the fact that her father and other men had control over her body.
Living under their authority, she lost her passion for performing.
Spears confesses that while she occasionally engaged in creative pursuits, her heart was no longer fully invested.
Singing and dancing, once her driving forces, became somewhat of a mockery.
“For thirteen years, I felt like I was merely a shadow of myself,” she writes.
The conservatorship left her feeling diminished and disconnected
