A lot of uproar has been sparked by the depiction of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe in the Netflix film “Blonde,” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates' novel.
The movie delves into the complex life of Marilyn Monroe, and certain aspects of this reinterpretation have ignited a storm of controversy online.
The film's dark themes and portrayal of s–ual assault have led to “Blonde” being the first Netflix production to receive an NC-17 rating.
One particular scene that has drawn intense criticism and backlash is the one involving JFK.
In this controversial scene, Ana de Armas portrays Marilyn Monroe, who is taken to a room occupied by someone resembling President John F. Kennedy.
Despite longstanding rumors about an affair between Marilyn and JFK, there is no concrete evidence to substantiate these claims.
In the scene, a seemingly drugged Marilyn questions her treatment as she is escorted by two Secret Service men to the president's room.
Upon entering the room, the president gestures for Marilyn to sit on the bed and encourages her not to be hesitant.
Meanwhile, JFK is depicted on the phone vehemently denying allegations of misconduct with a gubernatorial aide in Texas and a staff member.
Subsequently, JFK pushes Marilyn's head downwards to engage in a s–ual act.
The camera zooms in on Marilyn's face as she disengages emotionally, while Ana de Armas narrates Marilyn's internal thoughts.
JFK derogatorily refers to her as a “dirty slut.”
The scene has triggered a wave of criticism online, with many viewers expressing shock at its graphic nature:
“The scene involving JFK is incredibly disturbing… Andrew Dominik, you've gone too far #blonde” – Viewer A
“After the two-minute long scene with a close-up on Ana DeArmas's face during the act with JFK, I mentally disconnected.
Disrespectful.”
– Viewer B
“The portrayal of the president scene with JFK was uncomfortable and repulsive; much of the movie featured her nudity… this film is twisted and bizarre, painting her as perpetually subservient to men throughout her career… the JFK scene was particularly jarring.”
– Viewer C
“The JFK scene stands out as the most abhorrent in the film.
Whatever they were trying to convey was poorly executed and utterly unnecessary.
Utterly foolish.”
– Viewer D
“I did NOT need to witness Marilyn performing an act on JFK for two minutes with a focus on her face and a strange monologue running through her mind… the level of exploitation is appalling.”
– Viewer E
Furthermore, some critics have pointed out that the scene lacks historical accuracy, given the unsubstantiated nature of the alleged affair between Marilyn and JFK.
Despite the backlash, there has been no response from the filmmakers or actors involved regarding the controversial scene.
