Renowned actor Danny Trejo recently shared insights into his challenging upbringing and tumultuous past experiences.
The 78-year-old star of the iconic film From Dusk Till Dawn bared it all during a candid conversation with Mayim Bialik on her podcast, Bialik Breakdown, shedding light on the harrowing details of his early life.
From battling substance abuse issues to enduring incarceration, Trejo has faced numerous adversities throughout his life journey.
Despite the hardships he encountered, the seasoned actor firmly believes that every twist and turn in his past served a purpose.
Reflecting on his tumultuous youth, Trejo emphasized, “Everything unfolded as it was meant to be.”
During the podcast interview with Jeopardy!
host Mayim Bialik, Trejo delved into his struggles with alcohol addiction, which first took root during his teenage years.
Recalling his early encounters with alcohol, he remarked, “At the tender age of 15, I found myself intoxicated three days a week.
Growing up in Latino households where alcohol was prevalent, underage drinking seemed normalized.”
Moreover, Trejo revealed that his introduction to drug use occurred at a shockingly young age, with a relative introducing him to marijuana when he was just 8 years old.
Shockingly, by the time he turned 12, he had already been exposed to heroin.
While some may view these experiences as abusive, Trejo perceived them as acts of sharing within his familial environment.
The pivotal turning point in Trejo's life came during his incarceration in 1968, where he underwent a transformative journey towards sobriety.
Following his involvement in a prison riot, he found himself in solitary confinement, a period he considers a blessing as it paved the way for his recovery.
Recalling this period, Trejo disclosed, “It was during my time in solitary confinement that I achieved sobriety, marking a significant shift in my life.”
At the age of 21, Trejo's life took a drastic turn when he was incarcerated in 1962 for charges related to drug trafficking and robbery.
Subsequently, he spent a total of 11 years in and out of prison, with his only solace being the discovery of his passion for acting.
Transitioning from a tumultuous past, Trejo ventured into Hollywood, where he carved a niche for himself in the entertainment industry.
Trejo's foray into acting materialized when he provided boxing training to actor Eric Roberts for the movie Escape by Train.
His skills caught the eye of industry insiders, leading to his debut in the film with a minor role that kickstarted his acting career.
Since then, Trejo has ascended to stardom, captivating audiences with his powerful performances on the silver screen.
In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter last November, Trejo expressed
