Debra Winger recently disclosed the reasons behind her departure from the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” leading to Geena Davis stepping in for her role.
During an interview with The Telegraph, Winger revealed that her decision to leave the project directed by Penny Marshall was influenced by Madonna joining the cast.
Despite dedicating three months to training with the Chicago Cubs to prepare for her character, Winger expressed her dissatisfaction with the direction the film took after the singer's involvement.
She likened the shift in focus to “an Elvis film,” deviating from the initial concept she had signed up for.
Reflecting on the situation, Winger mentioned that the studio supported her stance, resulting in a unique contractual arrangement where she received payment even though she did not end up participating in filming.
This rare outcome, known as a pay-or-play clause, underscored the significance of her concerns.
Moreover, Winger emphasized her disappointment with how the movie portrayed the real-life women baseball players it was inspired by.
Despite finding the final product entertaining, she felt it failed to properly honor the achievements and struggles of the individuals it sought to depict.
Assessing Geena Davis' performance in the role initially intended for her, Winger offered a reserved acknowledgment by stating that Davis managed the part adequately.
She also expressed no ill feelings towards the rest of the cast, acknowledging their contributions to the overall production.
