Michael Douglas recently shared insights into the challenges and joys of parenting at an advanced age.
The 79-year-old actor opened up about a memorable incident where he was mistaken for his children's grandfather during a college visit.
Despite the mix-up, Douglas emphasized that being perceived as a grandparent was a tough moment for him.
In his interview with the Telegraph, the Oscar winner, who has been married to Catherine Zeta-Jones for almost 24 years, disclosed that they are proud parents of two children: Dylan, 23, and Carys, 21.
Additionally, Douglas has an older son, Cameron Douglas, aged 45, from his previous marriage to Diandra Luker.
Notably, Douglas humorously recounted a similar mishap when he was misidentified as Carys' grandfather at her high school graduation in 2021.
However, he took the incident in stride, attributing it to people trying to be courteous.
While not a grandfather to Carys, Douglas is elated to embrace the role of a grandfather to Cameron's children, Lua and Ryder.
Despite regrets about missing out on his eldest son's upbringing due to career commitments, Douglas expressed gratitude for having his children as part of his life in his later decades.
Reflecting on his past priorities, Douglas acknowledged that work had taken precedence over family during his early years as a father.
However, he highlighted the joy and fulfillment that his children have brought into his life during his 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Douglas praised his children as extraordinary individuals and credited their positive upbringing to the support from their mothers, both his ex-wife and Zeta-Jones.
He described their family life as harmonious and devoid of significant issues, expressing appreciation for the collective experiences they have shared.
As Dylan graduated from Brown University in 2022 and Carys approaches the final year of her college education, Douglas and Zeta-Jones find themselves as “empty nesters.”
The couple commemorated Carys' 21st birthday in April, with heartfelt tributes shared on social media.
In an Instagram post, Douglas celebrated his daughter's milestone birthday, expressing his profound joy and happiness in witnessing her growth.
Zeta-Jones also dedicated a touching tribute to Carys, emphasizing the blessing of watching her daughter evolve into a remarkable woman over the years.
The couple's messages encapsulated their deep love and admiration for their children, underscoring the significance of family bonds in their lives.
