In a recent interview on Marc Maron's WTF podcast, Hugh Grant, the renowned actor, confessed to having an affair with a prostitute named Divine Brown back in 1995.
This scandalous incident occurred because Grant was feeling distraught after watching one of his own movies.
The story made headlines when Grant, then 60 years old, and Divine Brown were caught in a compromising position by police near Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
Grant attributed his actions to his emotional state following the viewing of his Hollywood debut film, Nine Months.
Grant shared his thoughts on the situation, revealing, “I was about to launch my first Hollywood film – my timing was impeccable.
My problem was – that was my first Hollywood film and I'd just been to see it.”
He expressed disappointment in his performance in the movie, which left him in a negative frame of mind.
As Grant dwelled on his doubts about his acting in the romantic comedy alongside Julianne Moore and Robin Williams, his mood darkened.
He recounted turning to alcohol to drown his sorrows, which ultimately led to the regrettable incident with Divine Brown.
Grant mentioned, “I had a Ken Russell kind of lunch – and one thing led to another.
I just was disappointed in myself.”
Despite Grant's self-criticism, Nine Months premiered successfully, debuting at number 3 at the US box office and earning $138.5 million globally.
The film's commercial success helped propel Grant to stardom in Hollywood.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the scandal, Grant acknowledged his mistakes and apologized for his actions.
His arrest near Sunset Boulevard resulted in a fine and mandatory attendance at an AIDS education program.
Divine Brown faced legal repercussions as well, receiving a prison sentence for lewd conduct in public.
Following the scandal, Grant and Elizabeth Hurley, his partner at the time, continued their relationship for several more years before parting ways in 2000.
Despite their separation, they maintained a close friendship, with Grant eventually becoming the godfather to Hurley's son Damian.
Looking back on their tumultuous relationship, Grant expressed regret over the affair, recognizing his foolishness.
He emphasized the strong bond he shares with Hurley, describing their enduring connection as akin to that of siblings.
Grant acknowledged their challenging early years together and the growth they experienced as a couple.
Today, Grant continues to cherish his role as Damian's godfather, providing support to Hurley and her son following the tragic passing of Damian's father, Steve Bing, in 2020.
Their enduring friendship stands as a testament to forgiveness and understanding amid past hardships.
