Charlize Theron Opens Up About Experience with s–ual Harassment

has revealed her encounter with s–ual harassment early in her acting journey, expressing her disappointment with her own reaction to the incident.

In an interview with NPR to promote her upcoming movie Bombshell, which delves into the scandal involving former Fox News chief Roger Ailes and s–ual harassment allegations, Theron shared her personal ordeal.

The acclaimed actress narrated an incident from 1994 involving a prominent director, where she admitted feeling frustrated for not reacting as decisively as she wished she had in such a situation.

Recalling the unsettling encounter, Theron recounted visiting the director's residence for an audition on a Saturday evening, only to find him dressed in silk pajamas.

During the meeting, he offered her a drink and proceeded to touch her knee, leaving Theron puzzled about the norms in the movie industry at that time.

Struggling to comprehend the situation, she reflected, “You don't [know what to do] … if you haven't experienced it, it's a very difficult thing to wrap your head around.

I wasn't even fully convinced this was s–ual harassment until later in my career.”

Theron expressed self-blame for not responding assertively in the moment, regretting her inability to stand up for herself as she wished she had done.

Eventually, she apologized to the director and excused herself from the uncomfortable situation, realizing the significance of removing herself from a potentially harmful environment.

Years later, when the same director offered her a role, Theron seized the opportunity to address the past incident with him.

However, the director evaded the conversation, dismissing her concerns and opting to focus solely on the project at hand.

Reflecting on the encounter, Theron lamented the lack of closure or acknowledgment from the director, acknowledging the common plight faced by many women who confront similar situations of harassment.

With her film Bombshell set for release on January 24, 2020, Theron's revelations shed light on the pervasive issue of s–ual harassment in the entertainment industry and the struggles faced by victims in seeking resolution and justice.
