Actress Charlize Theron recently shared a candid account of her encounter with s–ual harassment at the beginning of her acting journey.
She expressed frustration over not responding as assertively as she would have liked in such situations, stating, “I didn't do all of those things that we so want to believe we'll do in those situations.”
Theron disclosed her experience while promoting the movie “Bombshell,” which delves into the scandal involving former Fox News chief Roger Ailes and allegations of s–ual misconduct.
In the film, Theron portrays ex-Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.
Recalling an incident from 1994, Theron recounted visiting the home of a well-known director for an audition on a Saturday night.
She described how he greeted her in silk pajamas, offered her a drink, and proceeded to touch her knee.
Reflecting on her naivety at the time, she pondered, “Maybe that's how they do it in the movie industry?”
The actress admitted that comprehending the gravity of the situation was challenging for her, especially since it was early in her career.
She revealed self-blame for not reacting more assertively, saying, “I wasn't even fully convinced this was s–ual harassment until later in my career.”
Theron expressed her regret for not standing up to the director, recounting how she eventually excused herself from the situation years later.
Despite planning to decline an acting offer from the same director, she decided to confront him in hopes of closure.
However, the director avoided discussing the incident, indicating a pattern of behavior.
Theron lamented the lack of resolution, emphasizing the common theme among victims of s–ual harassment.
During a wide-ranging discussion, Theron also shared a harrowing incident from her teenage years when her mother fatally shot her abusive father in an act of self-defense.
Recalling the traumatic event, she described how both she and her mother narrowly escaped harm as her father attempted to break into their room.
Theron reflected on the miraculous outcome of the shooting and the subsequent legal ruling that deemed her mother's actions as self-defense, absolving her of any charges.
The actress candidly recounted the emotional impact of these experiences, shedding light on the challenges faced by survivors of domestic violence and harassment.
