Gigi Hadid recently faced legal troubles in the Cayman Islands as she was fined $1,000 for possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The incident occurred when Customs & Border Control agents discovered the illicit items in her luggage during her arrival last week, as per court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
The well-known supermodel had flown to the tropical destination on a private jet from the United States for a girls’ trip on July 10.
Upon reaching Owen Roberts International Airport, local reports revealed that authorities found “ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja” in her bags after thorough scanning and manual inspection.
It was noted that the quantities were minimal and seemingly intended for personal use, according to reports.
Similarly, Leah Nicole McCarthy, a companion of Hadid, also had similar items in her possession.
Both individuals were detained on suspicion of importing ganja and related paraphernalia before being taken to the Prisoner Detention Center.
Following their release on bail, Hadid and McCarthy appeared in a Summary Court on July 12 where they admitted guilt.
Each was handed a fine of $1,000 with no formal conviction being recorded.
While details regarding the charges were not specified, court sources confirmed that the arraignment took place in George Town.
In response to the incident, a representative for Hadid clarified that she had marijuana legally purchased in New York City with a medical license, and highlighted that medical use of the substance has been lawful in Grand Cayman since 2017.
The spokesperson assured that Hadid’s record remains untarnished, and she proceeded to enjoy her time on the island post the incident.
Efforts to reach McCarthy for comments on the matter have been made by PEOPLE.
Despite the legal setback, Hadid and her companions have been unwinding under the sun, sharing glimpses of their vacation through social media.
On Instagram, Hadid showcased bikini photos along with a temporary dragon tattoo on her leg, playfully referencing the iconic “girl with the dragon tattoo” imagery.
In a show of resilience, Hadid later posted a series of photos and videos from her trip, including more bikini shots, with a caption that seemed to address the recent events with positivity, stating, “All’s well that ends well.”
The incident, though an unexpected turn, appears to have not dampened the spirits of the model and her friends as they continue to make the most of their time in the picturesque location.
