Whitney Houston reportedly managed to evade arrest recently, following an alleged discovery of half an ounce of marijuana in her possession by security officers at a Hawaiian airport who lacked the authority to apprehend her.
At Keahole-Kona International Airport in Kailua-Kona, security officials confiscated a bag from the renowned pop star and attempted to detain her.
However, she defiantly walked away and proceeded to board a flight to San Francisco, as detailed by reports from the Associated Press and the Hilo, Hawaii, Tribune-Herald.
It was disclosed by the AP that law enforcement arrived 45 minutes after Houston's departure on the plane.
Jay Kimura, the Hawaii County Prosecutor, stated to the AP that he would determine whether to press charges against the singer once the findings of a police inquiry were available.
The possession of 15 grams of marijuana carries a potential penalty of up to 30 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.
Efforts to reach out for comments from Houston's representatives on Monday were unsuccessful.
Allegedly, an airport security officer discovered the marijuana when requesting Houston to open her bag for inspection, as reported by the Tribune-Herald.
The airport security staff, employed by a private entity, lack the jurisdiction to make arrests for offenses not related to airport security.
On Monday, the airport's security office declined to provide any statements and directed inquiries to the UC Kona police department.
Unfortunately, a police representative could not be reached for a response.
Houston stands as a prominent contender at the 27th Annual American Music Awards, alongside teen sensation Britney Spears and country music star Shania Twain.
The event is set to be aired live from Los Angeles on Monday at 8 p.m. EST.
The prestigious Grammys ceremony is scheduled for February.
