Former President Bill Clinton recently disclosed in a newly released documentary that engaging in a s–ual relationship with Monica Lewinsky was a way for him to cope with his anxieties.
The documentary series titled “Hillary” on Hulu delves into the life of former first lady Hillary Clinton, shedding light on her early connection with Bill Clinton, their marriage, the scandal involving Lewinsky, and her 2016 presidential bid.
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton candidly discussed the extramarital affair that took place over two decades ago with Lewinsky, who was then a White House intern.
Acknowledging his wrongdoing, Clinton expressed regret for his actions, attributing his s–ual transgressions to seeking relief from the pressures of his presidential responsibilities.
He emphasized that everyone faces challenges and uncertainties in life that can lead to poor decisions.
Clinton clarified that he is not excusing his behavior but rather providing insight into the coping mechanisms he turned to over the years to manage his personal anxieties.
When questioned by filmmaker Nanette Burstein about why he embarked on the affair despite his prominent position, Clinton explained that impulsive decisions are not premeditated and acknowledged the negative impact it had on his family, country, and colleagues.
At the time, Lewinsky served as an intern under Jennifer Palmieri, a special assistant to the White House chief of staff.
Palmieri later played a role as the communications director for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign.
Expressing remorse, Clinton expressed discomfort with Lewinsky being solely associated with the scandal, expressing sympathy for how her life became defined by those events.
While Lewinsky has yet to respond to Clinton's recent remarks, she previously expressed a desire to move past the notoriety of the affair, suggesting that it is time to retire the label of “The Lewinsky Scandal.”
Clinton's justifications for his actions sparked debate on social media, with some suggesting alternative ways to address anxiety rather than seeking solace in inappropriate relationships.
Lewinsky herself has emphasized that their affair was consensual.
Clinton faced impeachment in 1998 on charges related to the affair, specifically obstruction of justice and perjury, before being acquitted by the Senate in 1999.
Prior to his presidency, he faced allegations of improper conduct with other women, leading to similar controversies.
Initially denying any involvement with Lewinsky, Clinton later confessed to his wife, Hillary, who initially stood by him publicly but later revealed her devastation upon learning the truth.
Reflecting on his past actions, Clinton acknowledges the gravity of his mistakes and claims to have undergone significant personal growth since then.
He admits to the harm caused by his choices and expresses remorse for the pain inflicted on those involved.
