Richard Belzer, Iconic Detective and Stand-Up Comedian, Passes Away at 78

Richard Belzer, the beloved stand-up comedian who captivated audiences as the unforgettable detective John Munch, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.

His death occurred on February 19, with reports confirming that he died peacefully at his residence in southwest France.

According to his friend, writer Bill Scheft, Belzer had been facing numerous health challenges in recent years.

Belzer’s portrayal of Munch spanned an impressive 23 years, starting in 1993 and concluding in 2016 when he decided to step back from acting.

His character became a staple on television, appearing not only in “Homicide: Life on the Street” but also making memorable cameos in other iconic shows like “Law & Order: SVU,” “The Wire,” and even the quirky “Arrested Development.” Munch was more than just a character; he was a cultural phenomenon, known for his trademark sunglasses and sharp wit, solidifying his place as one of the longest-running characters in U.S. television history.

Beyond his acting career, Belzer ventured into writing, co-authoring the novel “I Am Not a Cop” in 2008 with Michael Ian Black.

He also penned several books delving into conspiracy theories, exploring topics such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

His curiosity about the world often translated into his work, showcasing his multifaceted talents.
