Winona Ryder Reflects on Life After Shoplifting Conviction

In an exclusive interview with Porter magazine, opens up about the aftermath of her shoplifting conviction and how it allowed her to take a much-needed break from the film industry.

The 44-year-old actress, known for her iconic roles in films such as Girl, Interrupted, Beetlejuice, and Little Women, was found guilty of stealing $5,000 worth of designer clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills in December 2001.

As a result of her conviction, Ryder was sentenced to three years of supervised probation, 480 hours of community service, and fined a total of $2,700.

Additionally, she was required to pay compensation to Saks for the stolen items and undergo counseling.

However, in her recent interview, Ryder dismisses the severity of her actions, stating that it was “not the crime of the century.”

Ryder explains that the incident provided her with a psychological turning point and an opportunity to step away from the spotlight.

She reveals, “I won't go into details, but it wasn't what people think.

And it certainly wasn't as significant as it has been portrayed.”

The actress emphasizes that the experience allowed her to take the time she needed, returning to her hometown of San Francisco and pursuing other interests.

During her hiatus from acting, Ryder clarifies that she didn't completely disappear from the public eye, contrary to popular belief.

She asserts, “A lot of people had the perception that I just vanished in the 2000s.

And while I did take a step back from that world, I reemerged in different ways.

I promise you, I was still actively engaged in things I was passionate about—it just wasn't in the spotlight.”

In addition to discussing her shoplifting conviction, Ryder also addresses the pressures she faced in Hollywood to undergo cosmetic surgery.

Rejecting the notion, she expresses her preference for aging naturally.

The actress shares, “I love getting older.

Perhaps it stems from always being the kid on set.

It's fascinating because these days, cosmetic surgery is almost treated as routine maintenance.

People have suggested that I should fix certain things, but I've been waiting for those changes to happen naturally.”

's candid interview offers a glimpse into her life post-conviction, revealing the personal growth and self-discovery she experienced during her time away from the film industry.

With her renewed perspective on life and commitment to embracing the process of aging, Ryder continues to inspire and challenge societal expectations in Hollywood.
