In a recent interview, legendary actor Anthony Hopkins delved into his personal life, discussing his “regrets” and the sensitive topic of his estrangement from his only daughter, Abigail Hopkins, who is a jazz singer.
When asked about their relationship, Hopkins deemed it “taboo” and expressed his reluctance to discuss it further.
He stated, “I want no word on that,” making it clear that this subject is off-limits.
Reflecting on his past, the 83-year-old star acknowledged having regrets but emphasized the importance of moving forward in life without dwelling on the past.
He admitted that one cannot undo their actions and must instead focus on living in the present.
Hopkins' remarks signify his acceptance of the decisions he has made and his commitment to embracing the future.
Abigail Hopkins, now 52, was born during the actor's first marriage to actress Petronella Barker.
However, the marriage ended when she was just 14 months old, leading to their divorce while Abigail was still young.
The estrangement between father and daughter has persisted for many years, and Abigail has previously discussed the impact of their lack of contact during her childhood.
In a 2006 interview with the Telegraph, Abigail revealed that she would only see her father once a year, which left her with a sense of sadness.
She acknowledged that this sporadic pattern had always been the norm in their relationship.
At the age of 16, a disagreement occurred, reportedly triggered by a comment Anthony made about Abigail's mother, further straining their connection.
Following their altercation, Abigail's life took a downward spiral.
By the time she turned 18, she battled substance abuse and even contemplated suicide after dropping out of university.
In retrospect, she attributed these struggles to the intermittent nature of her relationship with her father, expressing her anger and the overwhelming grief she experienced during that period.
During the 1990s, there was a brief reconnection between Anthony and Abigail.
She appeared in minor roles in two of her father's films, including “Remains Of The Day” (1993) and “Shadowlands” (alongside her father).
However, their renewed relationship did not endure, and they eventually ceased communication altogether.
In 2018, Anthony admitted in an interview with the Radio Times that he was unsure if he had any grandchildren.
He maintained a somewhat detached perspective on family dynamics, acknowledging that people make choices and sometimes families drift apart.
He expressed indifference towards the situation, suggesting that he remains unfazed by the estrangement.
Some may perceive Hopkins' outlook as cold, but he defends it as a reflection of life's harsh realities.
He referenced a quote from John Osborne, stating, “Well, it is cold.
Because life is cold.
It's like John Osborne's
