In a surprising turn of events, Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor found common ground in their negative opinions of Eddie Fisher, the man they both married and later divorced.
The scandalous marriage between Taylor and Fisher was short-lived, with their union taking place in 1959 on the very day Fisher's divorce from Reynolds was finalized.
The relationship was surrounded by scandal from the beginning, as Taylor went on to have an affair with Richard Burton in 1963, ultimately leading to the end of her marriage with Fisher.
Fast forward to 1966, and Reynolds and Taylor decided to reconcile their friendship while on a cruise to Europe.
Reynolds shared that both she and Taylor couldn't fathom what they ever saw in Fisher in the first place.
Their friendship had been strained during Taylor's affair with Fisher.
Despite having been friends since high school, Reynolds even served as Taylor's matron of honor when she married Mike Todd in 1957.
However, it wasn't until two years after Taylor's divorce from Fisher that they chose to let go of the past drama and mend their relationship.
During a voyage on the Queen Elizabeth in 1966, Reynolds discovered that Taylor was also on board when she noticed her luggage.
Initially hesitant, Reynolds decided to remain on the ship.
The former friends planned to meet in Reynolds' room to discuss and resolve their issues.
According to People, Taylor didn't apologize to Reynolds during their drinks in the room, but she did acknowledge her mistake.
She questioned why she had ever been involved with Fisher in the first place.
Reynolds recalled the conversation: “At that time, in my cabin, before we went to dinner, we both made our little amends.
I said, ‘Why in the world would you want him anyway?'
She said, ‘Well, I don't know why I did it, and I certainly was wrong.
But look what I have now!'
I said, ‘Well, lucky you!'
And that's how that got over.”
Vogue reports that after their conversation, Reynolds and Taylor got drunk together, solidifying their renewed friendship.
Their bond remained strong until Taylor's passing in 2011.
Throughout the years, there were numerous instances highlighting their close relationship.
In 2000, they starred together in the TV movie These Old Broads, a comedic portrayal of their real-life relationship drama.
Taylor even apologized to Reynolds on set, shedding tears about the Fisher affair.
During the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Taylor ensured Reynolds' safety in New York City.
Having attended the same Michael Jackson concert the night before, Taylor didn't want her friend to be alone and afraid in her hotel room.
At the end of that week, Taylor arranged for a private plane to transport Reynolds back to Los Angeles, ensuring she wouldn't miss her scheduled concert.
According to Todd Fisher's memoir My Girls, Reynolds arrived at the theater at 1:35 p.m. for a 2 p.m. curtain call.
At the start of the show, she publicly expressed her gratitude to Taylor for keeping her safe and getting her to the theater, concluding with the words, “I guess that makes up for the Eddie thing.”
Certainly, their enduring friendship proved stronger than any past troubles.
