Charlize Theron, the Oscar-winning actress, has shared a harrowing account of the night her mother defended herself by killing her father.
The incident occurred in 1991 when Theron was just 15 years old.
Theron and her mother, Gerda, were held at gunpoint on their farm near Johannesburg after her father returned home intoxicated.
During an interview with NPR, Theron described the terrifying experience.
She recalled, “My father was so drunk that he shouldn't have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun.
My mum and I were in my bedroom, leaning against the door to prevent him from entering.
He took a step back and fired three shots through the door.
Miraculously, none of the bullets hit us.”
In order to protect themselves, Theron's mother decided to end the threat by fatally shooting her husband, Charles.
The incident was deemed an act of self-defense, and as a result, Gerda faced no charges.
Theron, who portrays Megyn Kelly in the upcoming film Bombshell, expressed her willingness to openly discuss the traumatic event.
She believes that talking about such experiences helps people realize they are not alone.
Theron stated, “I'm not ashamed to talk about it because I do think that the more we talk about these things, the more we realize we are not alone in any of it.
This story is about growing up with addicts and the impact it has on a person.”
The actress revealed that she only knew her father as an alcoholic.
In the same interview, she also disclosed that she had been s**ually harassed by a prominent film director during her childhood in apartheid-era South Africa.
Bombshell, which features Theron alongside Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, will be released in UK cinemas on January 24th.
