Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire’s father, Vincent Maguire, has been revealed as a bank robber.
The shocking news comes after the death of Vincent’s sister, who left him with her two children to care for, in addition to Tobey.
Vincent, who worked as a chef, resorted to this drastic measure due to financial difficulties and desperation.
However, his poorly executed plan resulted in a series of mistakes that led to his capture.
Vincent chose a bank conveniently located across the street from his home.
In broad daylight, without wearing a mask, he made off with the stolen money on foot.
Unfortunately for him, a neighbor witnessed his escape with the loot, leading to his arrest.
This incident occurred in 1993, shortly after Vincent’s sister Theresa passed away, leaving him burdened with her children and struggling financially.
Despite his actions, Vincent’s lack of prior offenses and the absence of a weapon resulted in a relatively light sentence of two years in prison.
Since then, he has transformed into a model citizen.
At the time of the robbery, Vincent believed he had cancer, following his sister’s death and his own polyps diagnosis.
However, it was later discovered that he did not actually have cancer.
During the heist, Vincent entered the Coast Federal Savings bank at 9 a.m. and handed the teller a note demanding money, claiming he possessed a weapon.
In reality, he was unarmed, and the note mentioned his belief that he had nothing to live for due to his supposed cancer.
Immediately after the robbery, Vincent fled down the street, still carrying the bag of stolen money.
It was only because of an observant neighbor who alerted the police that he was caught within an hour.
Witnesses described Vincent as wearing a red baseball cap, a maroon windbreaker, and dark blue sweatpants during the crime.
In a futile attempt to change his appearance, he swapped these clothes for dark blue shorts, a gray and white shirt, and black-and-white tennis shoes with American flag socks.
Despite his efforts, Lieutenant Ken Lady from the Los Angeles Police Department’s bank robbery detail confirmed that Vincent’s disguise did not fool anyone.
Vincent eventually pleaded guilty and served his sentence at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles.
Interestingly, Tobey Maguire, while portraying Spider-Man’s alter-ego Peter Parker on screen, witnesses a criminal fleeing a crime scene but does not intervene.
