In a fateful turn of events during a quiet vacation, renowned actor Matthew Broderick and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Grey were involved in a fatal car crash in Northern Ireland.
The accident claimed the lives of two women who were in the oncoming vehicle.
Since that day, Broderick and Grey have struggled with the aftermath of the tragedy, rarely discussing it publicly.
The ill-fated trip took place in the summer of 1987, as Broderick and Grey sought some respite after their respective work projects.
Broderick had just finished filming Biloxi Blues (1988), while Grey was busy promoting the upcoming release of Dirty Dancing (1987).
On August 5th, the couple embarked on a drive from Irvinestown to Maguiresbridge but found themselves lost multiple times along the way.
Seeking guidance, they stopped at a gas station and asked for directions.
Unfortunately, the rain began pouring, so they waited until it subsided before continuing their journey.
However, the rain persisted, prompting another stop at a different gas station.
In a desperate attempt to find their way, Broderick and Grey made another stop outside Enniskillen, where they sought directions from an off-duty police officer.
The officer warned them that their desired route was unsafe due to the inclement weather conditions and offered them an alternative path.
However, Broderick disregarded the advice and continued driving on the same route.
The officer followed their car for a short distance and estimated that Broderick was traveling at approximately 40 miles per hour.
Tragically, Broderick swerved into the opposite lane, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.
The passengers in the other car were Margaret Doherty, a 63-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis who used a wheelchair, and her 28-year-old daughter Anna Gallagher, who often accompanied her mother on shopping trips.
All four individuals involved in the crash were rushed to Erne Hospital for treatment.
Sadly, Margaret and Anna lost their lives while in the hospital.
Although Broderick and Grey survived the accident, they sustained various injuries.
Broderick suffered cuts on his face from shattered windows, a concussion, a broken leg, and multiple broken ribs.
Firefighters had to extract him from the wreckage to administer first aid.
He remained in the hospital for about a month, recalling his experience as waking up with a strange sensation in his leg, unable to remember the events leading to the crash.
Grey, seemingly unharmed at first, later revealed that ligaments were torn from the back of her neck due to the intensity of the collision.
She endured severe headaches for days afterward and eventually required spinal surgery.
The crash shook the public, who sought an explanation for the tragedy.
Despite inquiries, Grey emphasized that the accident was just that—an accident.
Broderick pleaded guilty to reckless driving but evaded more serious charges like vehicular manslaughter.
Instead, he paid a bail of $4,075 and received a $175 fine.
The court's ruling left the family and friends of Margaret and Anna distraught, believing it to be a miscarriage of justice.
The crash occurred just days before the release of Dirty Dancing, exacerbating Grey's emotional turmoil as she navigated newfound stardom alongside profound grief.
In the aftermath of the accident, Broderick initially failed to reach out to the victims' family and friends.
It wasn't until 15 years later, in 2002, that reports emerged indicating his intention to meet with them during a visit to Ireland the following year.
Martin Doherty, the son and brother of the deceased women, expressed forgiveness towards Broderick, acknowledging that the tragedy was unintentional.
However, the meeting never materialized, and Broderick faced criticism in 2012 when he starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Honda.
Despite the passage of time, closure remains elusive for those affected by the crash.
Doherty admitted that meeting Broderick could potentially offer some resolution.
Ultimately, the incident continues to haunt Broderick, impacting both his personal and professional life.
