Jonathan Majors, the 34-year-old Marvel star, has been found guilty of assaulting his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
The arrest took place in March in New York City when Jabbari accused Majors of physically attacking her by slapping her, throwing her into a car, twisting her arm, and injuring her hand.
Majors, who previously pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and harassment, faced a 10-day trial.
Testimony from the driver of the vehicle and Jabbari herself was presented during the trial.
On Monday, a split verdict was reached.
Majors was found guilty of one count of assault and one count of harassment but was acquitted of another count of assault and one count of aggravated harassment.
Now, the focus shifts to the potential jail time that Majors may face.
It is estimated that he could be sentenced to up to one year in prison.
However, reports indicate that the sentencing will not take place until February 6, 2024.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg commented on the evidence presented in the trial, stating that it demonstrated a “cycle of psychological and emotional abuse, and escalating patterns of coercion.”
He thanked the jury for their service and acknowledged Jabbari’s bravery in sharing her story.
During closing arguments, prosecutors emphasized four key words: “control, domination, manipulation, and abuse.”
They criticized the defense’s portrayal of Jabbari seeking revenge, asserting that it was inconsistent with the testimony provided.
The prosecution argued that the events in March 2023 were not part of a planned act of vengeance.
Majors appeared emotional as his attorney, Priya Chaudry, maintained his innocence.
Following the allegations, Majors’ management team dropped him, and the US Army removed advertisements featuring him.
The impact of Majors’ legal troubles extends to his future projects.
Marvel, reportedly “in crisis,” has experienced disruptions in its upcoming superhero-blockbuster projects.
Additionally, Majors’ film “Magazine Dreams” has been removed from Walt Disney Studios’ release calendar.
The movie, directed by Elijah Bynum, follows the story of an aspiring bodybuilder played by Majors who struggles to find human connection.
