Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise have been making headlines not only for their roles in the latest Mission: Impossible movie, but also for the rumors surrounding their alleged romantic relationship.
Fans couldn't help but speculate about a possible rekindling of their romance after watching the latest installment of the blockbuster franchise.
However, Atwell recently came forward to set the record straight about her relationship with Cruise.
She revealed that she received a stern message from Cruise himself, which helped her overcome the affair rumors that surfaced around the same time as her engagement news.
Back in late 2020, during the production of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, reports began circulating about a possible romance between Cruise and Atwell.
An insider claimed that the pair had hit it off from the first day of shooting.
But Atwell has a different perspective on the matter.
She considers both Cruise and director Chris McQuarrie as “sort of two uncles” and finds the rumors upsetting.
“It feels base, it feels a little dirty, it feels grubby, it's not what I'm about,” Atwell explained.
“Why are things being assumed or projected onto me about my relationship with my work colleague and boss?
It's involving people in my actual life, my personal life, who have to be on the receiving end of that.
It becomes invasive.”
Atwell also shared the meaningful response she received from her 61-year-old co-star when she discussed the rumors with him.
Cruise told her, “You know exactly who you are.
You know what you're about.
And that is the only thing that matters.
It doesn't matter what people think of you, if you are in integrity with yourself, if you know what your value system is.”
With Atwell's bold statement and Cruise's stern message, it should be clear that there is no romantic relationship between the two co-stars.
This revelation is especially significant considering that Atwell recently got engaged to her long-time partner, Ned Wolfgang Kelly.
The Captain America: The First Avenger actress announced her engagement to songwriter and music producer Kelly earlier this year.
The couple has been linked since July 2022 and got engaged in April in Venice.
They were seen together at the Mission: Impossible 7 premiere party, where Atwell proudly showed off her stunning engagement ring.
As for the movie itself, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is currently playing in theaters.
Fans can enjoy the latest installment of the action-packed franchise while putting the rumors about Atwell and Cruise to rest.
