Heath Ledger, the acclaimed Australian actor, tragically passed away due to an accidental overdose caused by the misuse of prescription medications.
This information was disclosed in the official report from the New York City medical examiner.
Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on January 22, leading to initial speculation about a possible suicide.
However, his family in Australia vehemently denied these claims.
According to Ellen Borakove, the spokesperson for the medical examiner, “Heath Ledger's death was a result of acute intoxication caused by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.”
The drugs mentioned are the generic names for OxyContin, Valium, Xanax, Restoril, and Unisom, respectively.
Before his untimely demise, Ledger had been experiencing difficulty sleeping and was reportedly under significant stress.
This was partly due to his demanding work schedule and the recent end of his two-year relationship with fellow actor Michelle Williams.
Police discovered six different types of prescription drugs in his rented New York residence.
Born in Perth, Western Australia, Ledger rose to prominence with his role in the teen comedy “10 Things I Hate About You.”
