Val Kilmer Overcomes Throat Cancer Battle, Shares Struggles to Breathe and Eat

Val Kilmer, renowned actor known for his roles in movies such as “Alexander” and “Top Gun,” has opened up about his ongoing battle with throat cancer.

In his new Amazon documentary, titled “Val,” the 61-year-old star reveals the challenges he has faced in his health journey.

Diagnosed with throat cancer six years ago, Kilmer is now cancer-free.

However, he continues to deal with the aftermath of painful chemotherapy treatments, radiation, and a tracheotomy that permanently altered his voice.

Despite these setbacks, Kilmer remains determined to live life to the fullest.

In the documentary, co-directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, Kilmer’s personal struggles and experiences are shared.

The film was produced by Kilmer himself, along with his son Jack, 26, and daughter Mercedes, 29.

Scott and Poo were inspired to create the documentary after learning about Kilmer’s extensive body of work.

Scott explains, “We approached him three years ago…I’d worked with him on his ‘Cinema Twain’ project, and when he couldn’t tour the play ‘Citizen Twain,’ he was touring a film of the play, so I was working with him on that and some other projects, too, archiving his footage.”

The documentary features footage shot by Kilmer throughout his life, including behind-the-scenes moments on movie sets and personal home videos.

Kilmer’s authenticity and lack of vanity impressed the filmmakers.

According to Poo, he does not exhibit the artifice or protective barriers often associated with fame.

She describes him as a multi-faceted individual, combining childlike playfulness with deep wisdom gained from his spiritual journey.

This complexity is what makes the documentary so intriguing.

Despite his health challenges, Kilmer remains active in his acting career.

In 2020, he co-starred alongside his daughter in the film “Paydirt,” and he is set to appear in the highly anticipated “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Scott praises Kilmer’s unwavering positivity and refusal to indulge in self-pity.

He continues to express himself creatively and produce remarkable artworks.

Kilmer’s resilience and zest for life are evident throughout his journey.

In “Val,” Kilmer acknowledges that he may have appeared peculiar to some due to his experiences.

However, he has no regrets and embraces all aspects of his self-discovery.

Despite the obstacles presented by his disease, such as the need to cover the hole in his throat to speak, Kilmer remains grateful.

He emphasizes that every breath and every meal is a choice, and he appreciates the presence and understanding of those around him.

Val Kilmer’s story serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating the power of resilience, creativity, and gratitude in the face of adversity.

Through his documentary, he invites viewers to witness his journey and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of his life.
