American film actor Matthew Broderick, known for his roles in “War Games” and “Ferris Bueller's Day Off,” has been charged with reckless driving causing death following a head-on collision that claimed the lives of two women in Northern Ireland.
The incident occurred last month when Broderick's car collided with another vehicle near Enniskillen, approximately 75 miles west of Belfast.
Broderick, who is currently recovering from injuries sustained in the crash at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, appeared in a makeshift court on crutches.
During the hearing, Broderick did not enter a plea in response to the charge of reckless driving causing death.
According to police sources, the actor was driving on the wrong side of the road, as he was accustomed to U.S. driving laws which differ from those in Britain and Ireland where motorists drive on the left side of the road.
While Broderick suffered serious leg injuries in the accident, his girlfriend escaped unharmed.
Unfortunately, the two women in the other vehicle, a woman in her 60s and her 28-year-old daughter, lost their lives.
Broderick, who resides in New York City, was released on $4,000 bail and instructed to appear for trial in March of next year at a magistrate's court in Enniskillen.
No restrictions were placed on Broderick, allowing him to return to the United States before the trial.
He was not required to surrender his passport.
The charge of reckless driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a fine.
Throughout the hearing, Broderick appeared pale and drawn, likely due to his hospitalization since the accident.
It remains unclear whether he will contest the charges or if he plans to return to the United States prior to the trial.
Broderick's attorney did not provide any indication of the actor's intentions.
