In a candid interview, Brendan Fraser reveals that going public with his s**ual assault allegations had a detrimental impact on his career.
The renowned actor, famous for his role in The Mummy franchise, shared that the alleged incident left him in a state of “emotional” and “personal distress.”
Fraser acknowledges that speaking out about the assault caused his future projects to be derailed.
During a recent conversation with Lee Cohen, Fraser was asked if it altered the trajectory of his acting path.
The star of The Whale admitted, “Yes, because there's a power dynamic at play.
I had followed the rules until that point.
Suddenly, I felt violated, and it had gone too far.
I could no longer tolerate it.”
Fraser further explains, “It was causing me emotional and personal distress.”
He credits the Me Too movement, which gained momentum in Hollywood in 2017, for giving him the courage to share his own allegations.
“I spoke up because I saw many of my friends and colleagues bravely speaking their truth to power,” Fraser said.
“And I had something to say too.”
The actor made his s**ual assault claims against Philip Berk, the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
In 2018, Fraser publicly revealed the allegations in an interview with GQ.
He stated that his absence from the big screen was partially influenced by an alleged encounter with Berk.
Fraser described the incident in detail, expressing how he felt during that time: “I felt ill.
I felt like a little kid.
There was a ball in my throat.
I thought I was going to cry.
It was as if someone had thrown invisible paint on me.”
In response to Fraser's allegations, Berk issued a statement through his personal website, dismissing the accusation as absurd.
He pointed out that for the alleged assault to have occurred, it would have had to take place in a crowded room, and he would have needed superhuman abilities.
Despite the challenges Fraser faced, he is making a comeback to the big screen with The Whale, a film that has garnered praise from both the press and the public.
The movie is set to be released in the UK on February 3, 2023.
