In a devastating turn of events, Matthew Broderick, best known for his role in the iconic film “Ferris Bueller's Day Off,” was involved in a car accident that claimed the lives of two individuals.
The incident took place in 1987 when Broderick was visiting Ireland with his girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Grey, just days before the release of the hit movie “Dirty Dancing,” in which Grey starred.
On the fateful day of August 5, 1987, Broderick was driving a rented BMW 316 from Irvinestown to Maguiresbridge.
Along the way, they stopped to ask an off-duty police officer for directions before continuing their journey.
Unfortunately, heavy rainfall had left the roads slippery, and approximately 80 miles west of Belfast, the car veered onto the opposite side of the road, colliding head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
The car that Broderick struck was driven by Amy Gallagher, 28, who was accompanied by her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63.
Tragically, both women were pronounced dead at Erne Hospital, leaving behind a devastated family and community.
Broderick himself suffered injuries in the accident and spent four weeks in the hospital.
He sustained cuts to his face and a broken right leg.
Ken Ramsey, a local firefighter who was involved in the rescue efforts, described how they had to extricate Broderick from the wreckage to provide him with first aid.
Despite his own pain, Broderick's primary concern was for the well-being of the occupants of the other car.
He repeatedly expressed his worry, asking, “Did I hurt them?
Did I hurt them?”
Recounting the incident to authorities, Broderick revealed his memory loss surrounding the entire day, stating that he couldn't recall even waking up in the morning or making his bed.
His first recollection was regaining consciousness in the hospital, feeling a strange sensation in his leg.
As a result of the accident, Broderick faced charges of causing death by dangerous driving, which carried a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
However, he ultimately pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving and paid a fine of $175.
The decision sparked mixed reactions, with some feeling that justice had not been fully served.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Martin Doherty, Margaret's son, expressed his desire for a private meeting between Broderick and their family.
He emphasized that there were no lingering ill feelings and that he had forgiven Broderick for the accident.
Years later, he clarified this sentiment in an interview, stating that he believed Broderick did not intentionally cause harm and that he harbored no anger towards him.
Reflecting on the incident, Broderick admitted that it continued to haunt him.
Seeking therapy helped him come to terms with the terrible experience, and over time, he found solace and healing.
