In her memoir, “Out of the Corner: A Memoir,” Jennifer Grey opens up about her relationship with Matthew Broderick, shedding light on the fatal car crash that had a lasting impact on both their lives.
Decades after the release of the original film, “Dirty Dancing,” fans are eagerly awaiting the highly anticipated sequel.
The 1987 classic followed the story of Frances “Baby” Houseman (played by Jennifer Grey) as she falls in love during a summer at Kellerman's resort in the Catskills.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Grey, now 62, explained that the car accident in Ireland was one of the top three traumas of her life, possibly even the most traumatic.
She described the experience as terrifying, being alone on a deserted country road with no one else conscious or around.
The incident had far-reaching effects on her life.
The car accident occurred just before the release of “Dirty Dancing” and resulted in two fatalities and severe injuries for Broderick, who was 60 years old at the time.
Grey revealed that she thought Broderick was dead because he was unconscious and suffering from amnesia as a result of the accident.
She also admitted that she didn't initially know that two other women had tragically lost their lives in the crash.
The incident left a lasting impact on her and affected her in ways she couldn't fully comprehend.
Despite Broderick being behind the wheel during the accident, Grey emphasized that she never withheld any information about the incident.
She firmly stated that it was simply an accident and that Broderick was not to blame.
She described him as a great driver and emphasized that no one involved was drinking at the time.
Grey and Broderick met while filming “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” and kept their relationship hidden until they got engaged during the production of the 1986 film.
They were together for 12 years before ending their relationship in 1988.
Broderick went on to marry Sarah Jessica Parker in 1997.
After their breakup, Grey went on a blind date with Johnny Depp, whom she described as “ridiculously beautiful” but also “crazy jealous and paranoid” in her memoir.
She attributed his behavior to his unhappiness and feeling powerless due to his TV series, “21 Jump Street.”
Grey ended her relationship with Depp just before her 29th birthday.
She recalled that he engaged in impulsive and destructive decision-making, which ultimately led to their split.
Following his breakup with Grey, Depp started dating Winona Ryder, who happened to be Grey's neighbor at the time.
Grey described the experience as a nightmare, feeling replaced and as if she never existed.
The car accident and its aftermath have had a profound impact on the lives of Jennifer Grey and Matthew Broderick.
Their candid reflections offer insight into the challenges they faced and the ways in which these traumatic events shaped their lives.
