In a surprising turn of events, Alec Baldwin's late-night talk show has been officially canceled by MSNBC due to a series of public clashes with photographers and a scandal involving his use of a homophobic slur.
The decision to cut Baldwin from the network's lineup comes after the show was initially suspended for two weeks following the incident.
Baldwin, who was filming a movie in Hawaii when the news broke, expressed his disappointment and placed part of the blame on what he referred to as the “fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy” for orchestrating his departure from the network.
He specifically named GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro and blogger Andrew Sullivan as individuals who played a role in getting his show off the air.
The controversy began when Baldwin was caught on tape using a derogatory term towards a photographer outside his apartment.
Despite claiming that he used a different word than what was recorded, he issued an apology for his language.
Baldwin accused gay rights advocates of targeting him, leading to the demise of his show.
In a twist, Baldwin previously acknowledged Ferraro for informing him about the slur's offensiveness and pledged to remove it from his vocabulary.
However, he later pointed fingers at Ferraro and Sullivan for their involvement in the aftermath of the incident, indicating a shift in his stance towards them.
The actor compared his situation to that of another MSNBC host, Martin Bashir, who faced backlash for his controversial remarks about Sarah Palin.
While Bashir apologized for his comments, Baldwin questioned the network's decision to keep him on air despite the controversy surrounding him.
Despite Baldwin's efforts to address the situation and salvage his show, MSNBC confirmed the permanent cancellation of “Up Late With Alec Baldwin.”
The network characterized the decision as a mutual parting, signaling the end of Baldwin's late-night program.
In addition to the fallout from the homophobic slur incident, Baldwin's show had been struggling with low ratings and difficulties in booking guests even before the scandal erupted.
Reports suggested that Baldwin's demanding behavior behind the scenes, including specific requests like a personal humidifier and makeup room, contributed to the show's challenges.
As Baldwin's late-night show comes to an abrupt end, he reflected on the impact of the cancellation on his colleagues at MSNBC and expressed gratitude for their work.
Despite the setback, Baldwin acknowledged the possibility of leaving the entertainment industry to prioritize his family's well-being, hinting at a potential career shift in light of the recent developments.
