The renowned singer, Amy Winehouse, passed away in July 2011 due to alcohol poisoning.
Just before her untimely death, she disclosed a chilling confession to her physician.
Today, as the world commemorates what would have been Amy’s 40th birthday, it feels like a lifetime has passed since we bid farewell to the talented Back To Black artist.
At the age of 27, Amy was discovered deceased at her residence in Camden, north London on July 23, 2011.
Struggling with substance abuse for years, she had recently resumed heavy drinking prior to her demise.
Following an investigation, it was determined that alcohol poisoning claimed the singer’s life.
Testimony from a general practitioner who visited Amy the night before her fatal binge was presented during the inquiry.
Dr. Christina Romete recounted her conversation with Amy at the singer’s home in Camden, where Amy acknowledged her return to drinking after a prolonged period of abstinence.
She poignantly expressed her fear of death to the doctor, stating, “I don’t want to die.”
Although prescribed Librium to manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms, Amy declined mental health assistance, apprehensive that it might impede her creativity.
Dr. Romete praised Amy’s intellect and strong-willed nature, highlighting the singer’s preference for managing things her way, including therapy.
Describing Amy’s demeanor the night before her passing, Dr. Romete noted her calm yet somewhat remorseful state, mentioning that Amy was slightly intoxicated but coherent.
Amy confessed to resuming drinking on July 20, only three days before her demise.
When questioned about her plans to quit alcohol again, she responded ambiguously, saying, “I don’t know.”
Dr. Romete underscored the extensive advice she had provided Amy regarding the detrimental effects of alcohol on various body systems, emphasizing potential health risks associated with excessive drinking.
During the coroner’s inquest at St Pancras Coroner’s Court in London, assistant deputy coroner Suzanne Greenaway concluded Amy’s death as accidental alcohol poisoning.
The official ruling deemed her demise as a result of misadventure.
The coroner explained that Amy had consumed a lethal amount of alcohol, leading to her sudden and unforeseen passing.
With 416mg of alcohol per 100ml in her blood, surpassing fatal levels, Amy’s demise was confirmed.
Additionally, police discovered three empty vodka bottles at her residence.
Discovered by her security guard, Andrew Morris, Amy had spent her final night engrossed in TV and music in her bedroom.
Andrew found her unresponsive the next day at 3pm.
Despite a procedural error necessitating a second inquest in 2013, the conclusion mirrored the initial determination.
On what would have been Amy’s 40th birthday, her former band members have organized a special tribute show at KOKO in Camden on December 22 to honor her legacy.
