A recently surfaced interview with the late Amy Winehouse has revealed a startling confession from the renowned singer, where she disclosed that she began consuming whisky at the young age of 12.
The distressing revelation came to light as the audio recording captured the then 20-year-old Back to Black artist candidly acknowledging her early introduction to alcohol.
In the unearthed interview, obtained by The Sun, Amy Winehouse opens up about her initiation into drinking at just 12 years old and her subsequent daily consumption.
Ten years have passed since the tragic demise of the troubled music icon, who left the world at the tender age of 27.
In the 2003 interview, conducted prior to the launch of her debut album Frank, Amy strolls through the streets of her hometown in Camden, North London, reminiscing about her relationship with alcohol.
Expressing her fondness for Jack Daniel’s, she confesses, “I love Jack Daniel’s.
I just love it.
It’s great.
I drink every day but not usually Jack Daniel’s.
I’ve been drinking Jack Daniel’s for eight years or something.”
Acknowledging her early experimentation with alcohol, Amy reflects, “It’s like when you’re younger and you want to get that little bit drunker than everyone else, you drink whisky.
You know what it’s like when you’re a kid.”
She further reveals her affinity for other alcoholic beverages such as tequila and Dooley’s toffee vodka, emphasizing her capacity to consume a bottle of the latter nightly.
During the conversation, an incident unfolds where Amy seemingly encounters a stranger, prompting her to exclaim, “Get the f*** away from me, freaky,” before apologizing to the interviewer citing the presence of peculiar individuals in Camden.
The resurfacing of this recording coincides with the 10th anniversary of Amy’s passing, evoking deep emotions among her family, friends, and admirers worldwide.
On August 23, 2011, paramedics discovered Amy’s lifeless body in her Camden residence, with subsequent investigations revealing her demise resulted from alcohol poisoning, surpassing the drink-drive limit by more than five times.
In a poignant statement following the tragic loss, Amy’s grief-stricken parents, Mitch and Janis, shared, “The court heard that Amy was battling hard to conquer her problems with alcohol and it is a source of great pain to us that she could not win in time.”
Despite her tumultuous personal struggles, illustrated poignantly in her music, notably in the impactful track “Rehab,” Amy achieved remarkable success in the music industry, commencing her career at a mere 16 years old.
Her debut single from the album, “Stronger Than Me,” earned her an Ivor Novello award as she soared to double platinum status with Frank.
Subsequent accolades included five Grammy Awards for her 2006 album Back to Black, alongside critical acclaim for “Love Is a Losing Game.”
Recognized as the second-highest selling album globally in 2007, Amy secured a place in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2009 for the “Most Grammy Awards Won by a British Female Act.”
