A video that surfaced on Wednesday showing pop star Ariana Grande licking doughnuts at a shop in Southern California has prompted police to launch an investigation.
The incident reportedly took place on Saturday at a store in the Canyon Hills Marketplace located in Lake Elsinore, California.
In addition to the doughnut licking, the leaked video also captured Grande saying “I hate America,” for which she later apologized.
Authorities in Lake Elsinore, along with Riverside County public health officials, are currently looking into the matter.
The video appears to show Grande and a male companion maliciously licking the doughnuts.
Mayra Solis, a 22-year-old cashier who was present at the Wolfee Donuts shop when Grande visited, stated that the singer did not purchase any of the doughnuts she licked.
“She was really rude,” Solis told The Associated Press.
Joe Marin, the owner of the doughnut shop, explained to CBS 2 in Los Angeles that Grande and her rumored new boyfriend, backup dancer Ricky Alvarez, were caught on camera engaging in inappropriate behavior with his powdered doughnuts.
Marin disclosed, “One of the trays, yeah, she was licking on them and the other trays, she spit on them.”
He added that the health department downgraded his “A” health grade after the video went viral, stating, “I got a ‘B' today.
I've been open since 2009, and it's always been an ‘A'.”
Grande issued a statement earlier in which she expressed her patriotism, saying, “I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I've always made it clear that I love my country.”
She apologized for her choice of words in the video, claiming that her comments were taken out of context.
On Twitter, she shared an additional apology, admitting that she needs to set a better example for her fans.
Meanwhile, the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health is investigating the doughnut shop's practices.
Dottie Ellis-Merki, a spokesperson for the department, mentioned that the agency is looking into why the doughnuts were left out unprotected and exposed to the public, which goes against state food laws.
However, no further issues were found during the investigation.
As a result of the video, Wolfee Donuts has received a lower letter grade from the health department.
The owner, Joe Marin, said that he was given a “B” after the release of the video, which is a downgrade from his usual “A.”
Marin has been given seven days to address the “minor infractions.”
In light of recent events, Ariana Grande has announced that she will not be performing at the MLB All-Star Concert on Saturday.
She clarified that her absence is due to emergency oral surgery and not related to the leaked video.
Demi Lovato has been chosen as her replacement.
Grande concluded her statement by once again apologizing for any offense caused by her poor choice of words.
At this time, representatives for the singer have stated that she will not be providing further comment on the ongoing police investigation.
