Singer Bebe Rexha revealed that certain designers declined to create a dress for her to wear to the upcoming Grammy Awards, citing her size 6 to 8 figure as “too big.”
Despite facing rejection, other designers have stepped forward to offer their designs to the talented artist behind chart-topping hits like “Meant to Be,” a nominee for best country/group duo performance at the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards.
In a video shared on her official Instagram account, Rexha, who is also in the running for best new artist, expressed her disappointment over the situation.
She highlighted that custom dresses are commonly made for artists attending prestigious events like the Grammys.
The 29-year-old artist with a significant Instagram following of 7.3 million users, disclosed that stylists were informed by designers that her size was not suitable for their creations, leading her to question the industry's standards of beauty.
Expressing her incredulity, Rexha emphasized, “If a size 6/8 is too big, then I don't know what to tell you.
Then I don't want to wear your f—— dresses.
‘Cause that's crazy.
You're saying all the women in the world that are a size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses.”
Her video resonated with thousands, garnering over half a million views and more than 10,000 comments, including offers from designers willing to dress her for the awards ceremony.
Renowned designer Michael Costello, known for his appearance on “Project Runway,” extended his support to Rexha, declaring, “Bebe we have been friends for a long time i got you!”
in an Instagram post.
Elizabeth Kennedy, a designer who has styled celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Uzo Aduba, expressed her eagerness to create a dress for Rexha, emphasizing, “I'd love to make you a dress for the Grammys!
I'm a size 8 too, and yes it is a beautiful size.”
Model Tess Holliday empathized with Rexha, acknowledging the challenges faced by those in the industry.
Rexha's experience reflects a broader issue within the fashion realm, where celebrities like Ashley Graham and Leslie Jones have previously spoken out against designers who refused to dress them for major events.
In response to the overwhelming support, Rexha affirmed her confidence and self-worth, asserting, “If you don't like my fashion style or my music that's one thing.
But don't say you can't dress someone that isn't a runway size.
We are beautiful any size!
Small or large!”
With her bold stance, Rexha sets a powerful example of body positivity and inclusivity in the entertainment industry, inspiring others to embrace their individuality and reject unrealistic beauty standards.
