Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were once the beloved and highly publicized power couple of Hollywood during the early 2000s.
As a result, fans from across the globe were heartbroken when the Friends star decided to end her seven-year relationship with Pitt following rumors of infidelity involving Angelina Jolie.
Surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, the split between Pitt and Aniston had a significant impact on the actor's career.
This became evident when one intimate scene from Brad Pitt's hit action/romance film in 2005 with Jolie was almost edited out due to concerns about losing Aniston's fan base.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Doug Liman shared how a particular intimate scene between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the film was affected by Jennifer Aniston.
Liman revealed that the issue arose during the mixing of the movie when he discussed the choice of music for the scene with Dave Matalon, who runs Regency.
Liman expressed his desire to have Joe Strummer's “Mondo Bongo,” a tribal and seductive song, playing during the scene.
However, Matalon was concerned about upsetting Jennifer Aniston's fans, who were devoted followers of her hit sitcom Friends.
According to Liman, Matalon said, “I don't want to lose that niche audience of people who are huge Jennifer Aniston fans.
They might hate Angelina Jolie if the scene is too s**y.
People will see the scene and think, ‘Oh, that's how Angie did it.
She used her wiles to seduce him.'
I'd rather you choose something sweeter musically for the scene.
I'm not saying it's better; I'm just explaining where I'm coming from.”
Despite Matalon's reservations, Liman was able to defend his choice of music with the help of women on his sound crew.
Ultimately, he prevailed, and the steamy music was included in the final scene between Jolie and Pitt.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's Influence on Each Other During Filming
In the same interview, Liman discussed how much Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie influenced each other's performances in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
He revealed that Jolie portrayed a character similar to Pitt's real-life personality, while Pitt was tasked with playing a homemaker, which was foreign to him.
Liman explained, “He really is a homemaker.
He's into fabrics and art and architecture.
But for Angie, bringing her into that suburban home and trying to sit her down at the dinner table?
It was like asking her to simulate being on a spacecraft.”
Additionally, Liman noted that Jolie was vastly different from her on-screen character in terms of her personal interests.
He stated, “She had no point of reference from her own life of what a normal home would be like.
And she's much more interested in weapons than Brad is.
Whenever my prop guy showed her knives and guns, she displayed impressive knowledge.
While I was focused on the cool factor, she wanted to know about serrated blades and which hooks were best for ripping flesh.”
Despite their differences, both Jolie and Pitt delivered exceptional performances in the film, as evident from the overwhelmingly positive reviews received by Mr. & Mrs. Smith from fans worldwide.
