In a candid interview, actor Brendan Fraser revealed that speaking out about his s**ual assault allegations had a detrimental effect on his career.
Known for his role in The Mummy franchise, Fraser disclosed that the alleged incident left him in deep “emotional” and “personal distress.”
Discussing the impact of going public with his accusation, Fraser admitted that it had derailed future projects.
During an interview with Lee Cohen, Fraser acknowledged that the incident had changed the course of his acting path.
He explained that there is a power dynamic in the industry, and he had played by the rules until that point.
However, he felt violated and decided that enough was enough.
Fraser stated, “It has gone too far.
And I will no longer abide this.”
The actor further expressed that the emergence of the Me Too movement in Hollywood during 2017 encouraged him to come forward with his own allegations.
Seeing his friends and colleagues bravely speaking their truth to power inspired him to speak up as well.
Fraser shared, “I spoke up because I saw so many of my friends and colleagues who, at that time, were bravely emerging to speak their truth to power.
And, I had something to say too.”
Fraser's s**ual assault claims were directed at former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk.
In 2018, he publicly discussed the allegations in an interview with GQ, attributing his absence from the big screen partially to the encounter he had with Berk.
The incident allegedly occurred in 2003 when Fraser attended an HFPA-hosted luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Recounting the experience, Fraser described feeling ill, like a vulnerable child, and overwhelmed with emotions.
In response to Fraser's accusations, Berk issued a statement through his personal website, dismissing them as absurd.
He pointed out the implausibility of the alleged assault happening in a crowded room and sarcastically remarked that he would have to be a Marvel superhero to accomplish such a feat.
Despite the challenges he faced, Fraser is now making a comeback on the big screen with The Whale, a film that has garnered praise from both the press and the public.
It is set to release in the UK on February 3, 2023.
