In the days leading up to her passing in December 2016, Carrie Fisher engaged in her typical candid and bold interviews to promote her book, The Princess Diarist.
Within the pages of her book and during various interviews, the late actress and writer openly discussed a brief romance she shared with Harrison Ford on the set of Star Wars, revealing details of their three-month affair when she was 19 and he was a 33-year-old married man with two children.
Todd Fisher, Carrie's younger brother, reveals in his recent book, My Girls: A Lifetime with Carrie and Debbie, that Carrie harbored regrets about disclosing her relationship with Ford.
During an interview with People in November 2016, Carrie described the intensity of her connection with Ford, stating, “It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”
According to Todd's account in the Daily Mail, Carrie's mother, Debbie Reynolds, was unaware of the affair until Carrie made it public, and her disapproval subsequently led Carrie to feel remorseful about sharing the details.
Acknowledging her mistake, Carrie later expressed to their mother, “You're right.
I shouldn't have told that story,” as recounted by Todd in his book.
The bond between Carrie and Reynolds, who passed away within a day of each other at the close of 2016, was intricate, mirroring the complexities depicted in Postcards from the Edge.
Todd discloses that in the latter months of 2016, Carrie became upset with her mother for organizing an extravagant 60th birthday celebration for her while she was occupied in London filming Star Wars: The Last Jedi and promoting her book, leaving her no time to return to Los Angeles for the event.
Despite having suffered a stroke the previous year, Reynolds devoted herself to planning the party, eventually persuading Carrie to make the trip back.
Reflecting on her relationship with her mother, Fisher wrote in her memoir, Wishful Drinking, “She was so beautiful, and of course I dreamed of one day looking like her.
It was then that I knew with the profound certainty of a ten-year-old that I would not be, and was in no way now, the beauty that my mother was.
I was a clumsy-looking and intensely awkward, insecure girl… I decided then that I'd better develop something else—if I wasn't going to be pretty, maybe I could be funny or smart.”
According to Todd's narrative, Reynolds' love and devotion were exemplified by her desire to pass
