When supermodel Cindy Crawford and actor Richard Gere exchanged vows, she was 25 while he was 42, marking the beginning of their high-profile relationship in Hollywood during the early '90s.
However, their union only lasted four years.
Over the years, Crawford has occasionally shared insights on her time with Gere, shedding light on why their marriage came to an end.
Now, at 57, Crawford reveals that she lost herself in trying to conform to Gere's interests, as disclosed in the new Apple TV+ docuseries The Super Models.
Keep reading to unravel more details, including the current status of their relationship.
Gere and Crawford officially became husband and wife in 1991 after dating for a few years.
Their paths crossed back in 1988 at a gathering hosted by photographer Herb Ritts.
Opting for a modest ceremony in Las Vegas, they even used aluminum foil rings for the occasion.
Notably, Ritts captured the essence of their nuptials through his lens.
It was apparent that Crawford was more inclined towards marriage than Gere, as revealed later when she presented him with an ultimatum.
Regarding this, Gere expressed, “This woman, who I was crazy about and loved very much, said, ‘I can't wait.
I gotta move on if it ain't happening,'” according to The Mirror.
During a discussion at the 92nd Street Y in 2015, Crawford shared her perspective, recalling, “Richard and I had been dating for several years and at one point I was like, ‘Are we doing this or what?'
And he said, ‘Let's go to Vegas tonight.'”
Reflecting on her time with Gere, Crawford admitted, “I think I was 22 when we met.
In the beginning of a relationship, when you're a young woman, you're like, ‘You like baseball?
I like baseball.
Oh, you're really into Tibetan Buddhism?
I might be into that.
I'll try that.'”
She elaborated, “You're willing to kind of mold yourself around whoever you are in love with.”
In a 2013 interview on Oprah's Master Class, Crawford delved into the impact of their age difference on their split.
She highlighted the challenges she faced in discovering her identity while being in a relationship with someone older.
Crawford emphasized that women in their twenties undergo significant personal growth and empowerment, which can pose hurdles in maintaining a relationship where roles may shift over time.
As Crawford navigated her personal growth journey, her professional trajectory also underwent transformations during her marriage to Gere.
Explaining the shift, Crawford stated, “He was older, so I just was, like, in a different circle and not doing some of those same fashion-y things anymore.”
She added that her relationship with Gere coincided with a pivotal period in her career where she transitioned from the high fashion scene to taking more control over her path.
Following their divorce in 1995, Crawford found lasting love with Rande Gerber, whom she married in 1998.
They remain happily married with two children, Presley and Kaia, both carving their own paths in the modeling world.
On the other hand, Gere went on to marry Carey Lowell from 2002 to 2016, and is currently married to Alejandra Silva since 2018, with whom he shares two children.
