Renowned filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock once sent a chilling present to Melanie Griffith, according to Dakota Johnson.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Johnson disclosed that Hitchcock gave her mother a miniature coffin containing a likeness of her grandmother, Tippi Hedren.
Hedren, known as Hitchcock's muse, starred in his films “The Birds” and “Marnie.”
However, in her memoir “Tippi” published in 2016, she detailed the years of terror she endured at the hands of the filmmaker.
Hedren accused Hitchcock of s**ual assault and sabotaging her career by blacklisting her from other directors.
Johnson expressed her alarm and sadness over the disturbing gift her mother received as a child.
She described it as “alarming and dark” and remarked on the impact it had on her mother, calling it “really scary.”
Reflecting on her grandmother's ordeal, Johnson acknowledged Hitchcock's talent and influence in the world of art but also highlighted the corrosive effects of power.
She stated, “What happened with my grandmother was horrific because Hitchcock was a tyrant.
He was talented and prolific — and important in terms of art — but power can poison people.”
During the interview, Johnson shared another distressing incident involving her grandmother.
She attended a screening of the Emmy-nominated HBO movie “The Girl,” which depicted Hitchcock's obsession with Hedren.
Neither she nor her grandmother were warned about the content beforehand, leaving them shocked and affected by the portrayal.
Johnson expressed her disappointment, stating, “How could you not have warned us?”
She witnessed her grandmother reliving the traumas she experienced, emphasizing how Hitchcock had unjustly hindered her career.
This is not the first time Johnson has spoken out about her grandmother's experiences with Hitchcock.
In a previous podcast interview, Johnson revealed that Hedren taught her and Griffith the importance of standing up for oneself.
She referred to Hitchcock as a manipulative figure who ruined her grandmother's career due to her refusal to comply with his advances.
Johnson expressed the difficulty of discussing such matters because it involves her own grandmother, someone she holds dear.
The revelation of this disturbing gift further sheds light on Hitchcock's troubling behavior and the lasting impact it had on his victims.
Despite his artistic contributions, the dark side of his character cannot be ignored.
