Denzel Washington experienced a delightful moment recently when he met King Charles at the Royal Film Performance of *Gladiator II*.
The event took place at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in London on November 13, just one day before the King celebrated his 76th birthday.
His wife, Queen Camilla, was notably absent as she was recuperating from a chest infection.
King Charles made a special solo appearance to support the Film and TV Charity, coinciding with its centenary celebrations.
During this royal engagement, he mingled with the cast members of the much-anticipated film, including a visibly starstruck Denzel Washington, who is 69 years old.
As captured in video footage from the event, Washington greeted King Charles with a handshake, humorously admitting, “I didn't know if I was supposed to grab you or not, but it's my pleasure.”
This candid moment showcased the actor's charming personality and his slight uncertainty about the appropriate royal etiquette.
Interestingly, the royal family's official website notes that there's no strict protocol when meeting a member of the royal family.
While some people prefer traditional gestures—like a neck bow for men or a curtsy for women—many opt for a straightforward handshake.
Despite any initial confusion, Washington soon relaxed and was seen engaging enthusiastically with the King about his role in the film.
“I'm … just awful … I'm a lovely man you'll see.
I'm a lovely chap and doing my best,” he joked, lightening the mood further.
In return, King Charles expressed his admiration, saying, “You've been in so many films, it's fantastic,” which undoubtedly added to the warmth of their exchange.
The actor's ability to connect with the monarch was evident as they shared a light-hearted moment.
Reflecting on his character Macrinus during a previous screening in Los Angeles, Washington described him as a complex figure—a “misunderstood” man shaped by his circumstances.
He elaborated on how Macrinus manipulates those around him, including his own family, revealing a darker side to the character.
Washington painted a vivid picture of Macrinus: “He'd already used up his soul, so he didn't have any left.
But he's in bed with the devil.”
It's clear that the actor has put significant thought into understanding the depths of his character for this sequel.
