The buzz surrounding a supposed authentic intimate moment between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland during the filming of the 1973 movie “Don't Look Now” has persisted for years, suggesting that the duo engaged in on-set lovemaking.
However, Donald Sutherland, aged 82, dismissed these claims at the New York debut of his most recent film, “The Leisure Seeker.”
In response to inquiries about those who believed the scene was genuine, the actor, hailing from Canada, bluntly stated, “They're fools.”
Sutherland elaborated, revealing, “There were two cameramen present.
The shots lasted no more than 15 seconds each.
It was all very controlled – ‘Julie, keep your head still, turn slightly, Donald, okay, now Julie, (culmination).'”
Accompanying his explanation, Sutherland mimicked mechanical sounds to emphasize the artificiality of the situation.
Expressing his appreciation for the scene, the seasoned actor remarked that it evoked the essence of romantic intimacy.
Julie Christie also shared her sentiments, praising director Nicolas Roeg for capturing the intense emotional connection that arises during such moments, remarking on the subtleties and unseen aspects of the scene.
In the iconic film “Don't Look Now,” released in 1973, Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren portray a married couple who embark on a journey to savor life before the onset of Alzheimer's and cancer.
Acknowledging common concerns among individuals of his generation, Sutherland expressed anxiety regarding potential memory loss.
Following his brief stint in New York, he promptly flew to London to resume work on “Trust,” a miniseries helmed by Danny Boyle, where Sutherland assumes the role of tycoon John Paul Getty.
John Paul Getty is the focal point of Ridley Scott's recent project, “All the Money in the World,” featuring Christopher Plummer as the billionaire who adamantly refused to pay the ransom for his abducted grandson.
Contrary to portraying Getty as a villain, Sutherland views him as an individual grappling with family members plagued by substance abuse issues.
Scheduled for its premiere in March, “Trust” also stars Michael Esper and Hilary Swank alongside Sutherland.
