Donald Sutherland, the well-known actor, recently spoke candidly about a scandalous affair he had in the 60s and 70s with Hollywood superstar Jane Fonda.
While he was back on screen for Pride and Prejudice last weekend, it was more than five decades ago that Sutherland found himself entangled in a brazen affair.
The affair took place during the filming of Klute in 1970, where he fell deeply in love with Fonda, despite both of them being married at the time.
Sutherland and Fonda not only stood together in their support of the civil rights movement and opposition to the Vietnam War, but they also shared an intense passion behind closed doors.
Sutherland often reminisces about their intimate moments together, cherishing the memories.
In 1970, rumors of Fonda's separation from her husband Roger Vadim began circulating.
Fonda had been with Vadim since 1963, and the couple worked together on the film Barbarella in 1968.
Sutherland always maintained that it was Fonda who made all the advances towards him.
He recalls the moment she made her intentions clear, saying, “We'd already been cast but had not started shooting, and one day, she made it very clear, via a somewhat provocative suggestion, that I should come home with her.
And I just said… Ok.”
Sutherland's revelation marked the end of his second marriage to Shirley Douglas, with whom he had twins, Kiefer and Rachel.
In 2014, Kiefer admitted that they never discussed the affair, but he understood his father's perspective.
He believed that falling in love could make people believe in everything passionately, making it difficult to judge them.
Sutherland has frequently and famously spoken about the affair, even going as far as declaring that Fonda had the most beautiful bre-sts in the world at the time.
However, the details of their encounters were deemed too explicit to be printed.
In a later interview with GQ magazine, Sutherland recounted another intimate moment shared with Fonda.
He described a scene at the Chelsea Hotel in 1970 or '71, where they were both n^ked and bathed in moonlight.
The sight of Fonda's perfect bre-sts left him breathless and captivated him entirely.
Unfortunately, their passionate connection eventually crumbled, leaving Sutherland devastated.
The relationship ended in Tokyo, breaking his heart.
Reflecting on that time, he said, “We got together shortly before we made Klute and then we were together until the relationship exploded and fell apart in Tokyo.
And it broke my heart.
I was eviscerated.
I was so sad.
It was a wonderful relationship right up to the point we lived together.”
However, in 1972, Sutherland found love again when he married French Canadian actress Francine Racette, whom he met on the set of the Canadian pioneer drama Alien Thunder.
Their marriage has stood the test of time, making them one of Hollywood's longest and most stable couples.
Together, they have three sons – Rossif Sutherland, Angus Redford Sutherland, and Roeg Sutherland.
