Elvis Presley uttered his last words to his fiancee, Ginger Alden, on the early morning of August 16, 1977, at Graceland, his Memphis estate.
He informed her, “I'm going to the bathroom to read.”
Those simple words marked the final utterance of the legendary king of rock'n'roll.
Struggling to sleep, Presley opted to head to the bathroom to read, not wanting to disturb his beloved, Ginger Alden, the beauty queen.
In a tender exchange, Alden responded, “OK, but don't fall asleep,” as she closed her eyes while leaving his reading light switched on.
Several hours later, around 2 pm, Alden realized that Presley had not returned to bed.
Concerned, she knocked on the bathroom door, calling out to him, before eventually opening it.
It was then that she made the harrowing discovery of finding him lifeless.
Alden is set to release a memoir titled Ginger and Elvis, slated for publication on September 2 by Berkley in hardcover format.
In this account, she delves into their brief love affair and the tragic events surrounding Presley's passing.
Detailing the heart-wrenching moment she found Presley slumped on the bathroom floor, Alden recalls the chilling sensation of his cold skin when she touched him.
Despite trying to revive him by slapping him gently and attempting to open his eye, it was evident that he had already departed.
In a desperate attempt to seek help, Alden swiftly pressed the intercom button that connected to the kitchen, summoning aid.
Presley's demise, caused by an overdose of medications, was unsuccessfully combated by his former army comrade, Joe Esposito, leading to the untimely death of the 42-year-old icon.
The memoir not only narrates the tragic end of the king of rock'n'roll but also sheds light on the intricacies of their relationship and the diverse facets of Presley's persona, according to a review by Kirkus.
A chance encounter at a fairground led Presley to notice Alden, who was merely 20 years old at the time, a significant age gap between them.
It was in the confines of his bathroom where Presley proposed to her on January 26, 1977, the same location where he would eventually draw his last breath.
