Actress Emilia Clarke recently disclosed the reason behind her decision to decline the lead role in the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, citing concerns about being stereotyped for on-screen nudity.
After portraying Daenerys Targaryen for eight seasons in Game of Thrones, Clarke shared with The Hollywood Reporter her admiration for director Sam Taylor-Johnson's vision for the film adaptation of EL James's popular novel.
Despite acknowledging Taylor-Johnson as a “genius” with a “beautiful” interpretation of the book, Clarke expressed frustration over constantly being questioned about n^dty due to her previous roles.
She emphasized the disparity in inquiries she faces as a woman in the industry, stating that her past n^dty on Game of Thrones continues to overshadow her other work, which she did solely for the sake of her characters rather than for objectification.
Feeling exasperated by the recurring focus on her past on-screen nudity, Clarke explained her reluctance to accept a role in Fifty Shades of Grey, where sensuality and n^dty are key components.
She voiced her refusal to subject herself to a situation that would perpetuate the cycle of being pigeonholed based on her previous performances, especially regarding intimate scenes.
In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter alongside fellow actresses Patricia Arquette, Christine Baranski, Danai Gurira, Niecy Nash, and Michelle Williams, Clarke highlighted the challenges faced by women in the entertainment industry.
The group discussed various aspects of their careers and the persistent scrutiny that female actors encounter regarding their appearance and choices on screen.
While Clarke has garnered immense popularity for her role in Game of Thrones, she is now set to captivate audiences in the upcoming British romantic comedy Last Christmas, scheduled for release in November this year.
As she navigates her career post-Game of Thrones, Clarke's decision to turn down Fifty Shades of Grey reflects her commitment to breaking away from stereotypes and embracing diverse roles that challenge her creatively.
