Greyson Chance, a former teen pop star, has recently come forward with claims that he was manipulated and ultimately abandoned by Ellen DeGeneres after she catapulted him to stardom.
At the age of 12, Chance gained recognition when a video of him singing Lady Gaga's “Paparazzi” went viral online in 2010, leading to an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
In a new report by Rolling Stone, Chance reveals that despite DeGeneres presenting herself as his guardian and mentor, their relationship was not what it seemed.
He recalls how uncertain they were about the industry, and DeGeneres appeared as a guiding figure who promised to support him.
According to Chance, DeGeneres even assured his mother that she would never have to work again.
She gifted him $10,000 and a new piano, and eventually signed him as the first act on her record label eleveneleven, assuring him that they would navigate his career together.
Initially, Chance felt that DeGeneres was genuinely invested in his success.
However, as his schedule grew busier, she became controlling and domineering, exerting influence over every aspect of his career, including his fashion choices and creative output.
Chance describes feeling like he was constantly under her watchful eye, and any opinion she had would drastically alter the course of his career.
Chance also recounts instances where DeGeneres berated people in front of him, showing a degrading and hostile attitude towards others.
In one incident, he was unable to watch an advanced copy of Justin Bieber's documentary due to exhaustion from touring.
DeGeneres allegedly called Chance's mother and berated her for his inability to watch the film, questioning her parenting skills.
Feeling like a pawn in her game, Chance watched the movie to appease her.
According to Chance, DeGeneres completely abandoned him when his music began to underperform.
As his second record flopped in late 2012, he was dropped by his label group and management team.
Despite reaching out to DeGeneres for support, he never received a response.
Throughout this time, he continued to make appearances on her show, where he felt a lack of genuine care or concern from DeGeneres.
Chance returned to The Ellen DeGeneres Show twice more, but their interactions remained superficial and insincere.
Although DeGeneres praised him on-screen for coming out as gay two years prior, behind the scenes, they had not spoken in years.
Chance expresses the emotional toll this took on him, feeling that he had to fake his happiness and gratitude for the TV gig while suspecting that DeGeneres was doing the same.
In his own words, Chance describes DeGeneres as manipulative, self-centered, and opportunistic.
He has never encountered someone more blatant in their manipulation.
The Independent has reached out to DeGeneres's representatives for comment.
This revelation comes after DeGeneres's talk show ended earlier this year, following allegations of workplace misconduct, racism, and bullying on set.
DeGeneres dismissed these allegations as orchestrated and misogynistic.
