American supermodel, Gigi Hadid, found herself in legal trouble when she was arrested and fined for cannabis possession during her recent vacation in the Cayman Islands.
The 28-year-old model and her friend were detained after their luggage was searched upon their arrival on a private jet on July 10th.
After pleading guilty in court, Hadid and her companion paid a fine, but fortunately, no conviction was recorded.
In a statement issued by Hadid’s representative to the PA news agency, it was explained that the marijuana was legally purchased in New York with a medical license.
Furthermore, the representative pointed out that the use of marijuana for medical purposes has been legal in Grand Cayman since 2017.
This clarification aims to ensure that Hadid’s record remains untarnished and that she was able to enjoy the rest of her time on the island.
According to the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control, Hadid and her friend, Leah McCarthy, were arrested for the importation of marijuana and related utensils used for its consumption.
However, the amount confiscated was minimal and appeared to be for personal use only, as stated by the agency.
Following their arrest, the pair was taken to a detention center but was later released on bail, as reported by the local newspaper, the Cayman Marl Road.
Two days after their detention, Hadid and McCarthy appeared in the Cayman Islands summary court, where they were fined 1,000 Cayman Islands dollars (equivalent to $1,200 or £920).
Despite this setback, Hadid seemed to make the most of her holiday and shared her positive outlook with her Instagram followers.
She posted photos of her beachside getaway along with the caption, “All’s well that ends well.”
