Before Grace Kelly became royalty, she was just another Hollywood star, known for her many roles and prestigious awards.
However, she was also rumored to have been involved in numerous affairs with famous individuals in the industry.
One particularly scandalous rumor surrounded her time on set in Africa with Clark Gable.
While the alleged affair may not have been the most shocking thing to happen in Hollywood, it certainly caught people's attention.
As the darling of Hollywood, Grace Kelly had no shortage of admirers, both within and outside the industry.
She garnered attention for her performances in films like “To Catch a Thief,” “High Society,” “Mogambo,” “Dial M for Murder,” and “The Country Girl.”
With fame came speculation about her romantic involvements, including William Holden, Ray Milland, Gay Cooper, Oleg Cassini, Bing Crosby, and Clark Gable.
According to The New Yorker, some of these rumors were unfounded.
The author Donald Spoto writes, “Contrary to what you may have heard, [Kelly] did not have an affair [with] the star and the director, respectively, of ‘High Noon,' Cooper and Fred Zinnemann.
There is not a shred of evidence to support either rumor.”
The same goes for Ray Milland and Bing Crosby.
However, the most impressive denial was regarding Clark Gable during the filming of “Mogambo.”
Despite these claims, Grace Kelly hinted at something more in an interview, especially when discussing her time with Clark Gable on the African film set.
While she never explicitly admitted to having an affair with Clark Gable, her words strongly suggested it.
There was an undeniable implication that there could have been more if circumstances were different.
Her alleged quote about being alone in a tent in Africa with Clark Gable sparked great interest and speculation.
It was juicy gossip that topped the list.
The Guardian reported, “She would have an affair with Clark Gable while filming ‘Mogambo,' leading her to quip: ‘What else is there to do if you're alone in a tent in Africa with Clark Gable?'
Later, she told an interviewer that ‘if there hadn't been so much of an age discrepancy, things might have been different.'”
Fortunately, the age difference played a significant role because Grace Kelly had grander plans than marrying an American actor.
To everyone's surprise, Grace Kelly found herself entangled in a whirlwind romance with Prince Rainier III of Monaco, a foreign royal.
It was a fairy tale come true, as an American girl captured the heart of a prince and became a princess shortly after.
According to Biography.com, their love story began with a chance encounter on a French train, and it soon unfolded into a royal tale for the ages.
The couple fell in love, tied the knot, and welcomed three royal additions to the Grimaldi family.
A British Pathe documentary noted that the citizens of Monaco embraced the royal wedding, fearing that without an heir, they would become a mere fringe territory.
The narrator reported, “It's not often a film star's marriage affects a map of Europe, but this one may, and that's why the flags are out.
Now that their prince is getting married, they feel a lot safer.”
In the end, Grace Kelly's acting career and alleged steamy affairs came to an end, making way for her new role as the Princess of Monaco.
It was a fairy tale ending that few could have predicted, as an American actress found love with a foreign prince and married into royalty.
