Greyson Chance, the former child star known for his viral performance of Lady Gaga's “Paparazzi,” has revealed his unpleasant experience working with Ellen DeGeneres.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Chance described DeGeneres as “controlling” and “insanely manipulative.”
Chance rose to fame in 2010 after his YouTube video of his talent show performance went viral, garnering over 71 million views.
DeGeneres took notice and invited him to perform on her show.
She even signed him to her record label, eleveneleven.
However, their relationship quickly turned sour.
According to Chance, DeGeneres had complete control over every aspect of his career, including his wardrobe.
He claimed that she would berate people in front of him and dictate what he would wear on the show.
Chance felt like he was constantly under her watchful eye, and one text message from her could change his entire week or month.
Furthermore, Chance revealed that DeGeneres wanted him to follow in the footsteps of Justin Bieber, whom he was often compared to.
He recalled an incident where DeGeneres became angry with him for not watching Bieber's documentary and even called his mother to express her disappointment.
In 2012, Chance's music and ticket sales declined, leading to his record label dropping him.
He said that DeGeneres completely abandoned him during this difficult time, refusing to address the lack of communication.
Feeling disillusioned, Chance briefly quit music to attend college, but eventually returned to his career with the album “Portraits” in 2019.
During a later appearance on DeGeneres' show, she praised Chance for coming out as gay.
However, he felt that she was insincere and trying to take credit for his journey.
He emphasized that their relationship had deteriorated, and he could see the anxiety and PTSD in his own eyes during their interviews.
Despite starting his career under DeGeneres' wing, Chance believes that his overall success is not owed to her.
He expressed gratitude for the early opportunities but asserted that he had to pull himself up and that DeGeneres was nowhere to be found.
While Chance declined an invitation to appear on Ellen's show in 2022, he mentioned that he maintains a positive relationship with Lady Gaga, who has been a source of support for him throughout his journey.
